In this project, Light aimed to create a surrealist experience that prompts audiences to develop their own interpretations while exploring AI's potential in enhancing creativity. Light combined AI-generated imagery with public domain ballroom dancing footage and mid-20th century-inspired motion graphics to contrast contemporary AI with historical cinema styles.
The experience begins with a classic cinematic feel, featuring a clean musical score and minimal dialogue to establish a nostalgic atmosphere. This is followed by a dramatic shift as AI-generated distortions and visual overlays introduce tension, challenging viewers to confront their perceptions of AI.
The project utilises a consistent audiovisual approach in the first half to set expectations, which are then subverted in the latter half through audio distortions and AI-enhanced visuals. This technique highlights the unsettling integration of AI with historical media, creating a striking contrast between the old and the new.
Ultimately, Light’s project successfully evokes a range of emotional responses, encouraging viewers to reflect on their personal relationship with AI and its future implications. By blending old footage with modern technology and focusing on contrast and distortion, Light crafted an experience that can be both positively and unsettlingly perceived, achieving the goal of a multifaceted narrative experience.
